The rules for exposure floats away from it all and i find it very liberating. I feel more free when shooting B&W's. Its okey to underexpose 70% of the picture to give a certain part of the picture more focus. Its even okey to in some cases make a part just look like a blob of black, as long as the main focus of the picture is lookinjg somewhat thredimansional.
I just love it. And my Nikon is a great tool for it aswell, i just set it to B&W custom. And then i set it to +1sharpness and +2contrast. I like that setting cause im a minimal fan, and more contrast and sharpness defenetly helps in achieving a clearer view of what is portrayed. But this setting is awesome for shooting faces or more textured stuff aswell. Trust me a simple plank of wood will look like the grand canyon of shot just right in the right lighting with this setting.
Maybe its my nordic heritage to like simplicity, i have heard that sweds in general tend to lean a bit to the simplicity side by nature.
But try this setting out, or what ever is the same for the brand you use, trust me you can shoot the simplest thing and it will look great. Its a great way to practise youre composition skills!
I'll upload some B&W's now that i really liked, some "doodles" or what ever you can call it.
